Cheltenham Ladies’ College opened in 1854 to provide girls with an education equal to that of boys, and today, we continue to be proud of our tradition of innovation, excellence and empowerment in the education of young women.

Our GCSE, A Level and IB results are consistently excellent. We have been named top girls' boarding school in the country for IB in three of the last four years, and repeatedly recognised as the best independent school in the South West of England.

The future we are preparing our pupils for is full of excitement and challenge. While academic achievements are important, these must go hand-in-hand with cocurricular activities that interest and challenge them, a community that supports them, and opportunities to pursue passions and learn from failure. Our wide-ranging programmes offer opportunities to undertake new experiences and we are committed to helping every girl to find the talent and potential that lie within.

By nurturing well-rounded and self-confident girls, we help them to leave College as inspirational and empowered young women. Our leavers choose a variety of paths for future study, from medicine, law or engineering, to design, animation or drama: this is testament to the independent thinking, creativity and self-belief actively encouraged and thriving within our College community.

GSA School Profile

St Mary’s is a boarding school with strong values, where your daughter will feel at home, fulfilling and exceeding her academic potential.

Recent GCSE results showed that pupils typically attain 1 or 2 grades above their predicted grades on entry. Students mostly enter Russell group universities and this year 14% of leavers received offers from Oxford or Cambridge. They choose to study a wide range of subjects including Medicine, Maths, Engineering, Sciences, Philosophy, History, Modern Languages, Fine Art and much more.

Highly-skilled teachers provide plenty of challenge and girls experience an academic enrichment programme which encourages them to do their best. Unusually for a British school, parents are provided with a short weekly report on individual academic attainment, so that you can share in your daughter’s progress.

All boarders remain in school at weekends, and are expected to study and participate in a programme of social and cultural activities. We encourage girls to take on leadership roles, so that they leave St Mary’s as confident and capable young women, excellently prepared for the next stage.
