Cheltenham Ladies’ College opened in 1854 to provide girls with an education equal to that of boys, and today, we continue to be proud of our tradition of innovation, excellence and empowerment in the education of young women.

Our GCSE, A Level and IB results are consistently excellent. We have been named top girls' boarding school in the country for IB in three of the last four years, and repeatedly recognised as the best independent school in the South West of England.

The future we are preparing our pupils for is full of excitement and challenge. While academic achievements are important, these must go hand-in-hand with cocurricular activities that interest and challenge them, a community that supports them, and opportunities to pursue passions and learn from failure. Our wide-ranging programmes offer opportunities to undertake new experiences and we are committed to helping every girl to find the talent and potential that lie within.

By nurturing well-rounded and self-confident girls, we help them to leave College as inspirational and empowered young women. Our leavers choose a variety of paths for future study, from medicine, law or engineering, to design, animation or drama: this is testament to the independent thinking, creativity and self-belief actively encouraged and thriving within our College community.

GSA School Profile

An exception girls' boarding school on a secure 110-acre campus 1 hour from London, where girls are encouraged to explore and discover all their strengths through an excellent range of academic, co-curricular and enrichment opportunities, inside and outside the classroom, supported by first-rate pastoral care.

Ranked amongst the top UK girls’ boarding schools for examination results, our girls go on to some of the world’s leading universities. But it is the personal triumphs and achievements that are most celebrated. We place equal importance on developing a well-established work ethic and a core set of traditional values, skills and beliefs that enable Downe House girls to flourish.

What does it mean to be a Downe House girl? The answer is rooted in our diverse and inclusive School community, and in the Downe House DNA: Collaboration, Resilience, Creativity, Aspiration, Compassion, Communication and Outward Looking. No matter what the girls go on to do beyond Downe, and the sheer variety of the career paths and achievements of our alumnae is testimony to our ethos, they take with them the enduring imprint of the Downe House DNA.

Whoever you are… Whoever you want to be… Be a Downe House girl.
