UK Boarding Schools

Why choose a UK boarding school?

UK boarding schools offer you an outstanding education and help you to develop the skills you need to progress to university. All UK boarding schools have to meet strict standards set by the government on the quality of their teaching, facilities and student care.

Many UK boarding schools combine beautiful and historic buildings with a mix of modern classrooms and traditional architecture. The excellent facilities make living and learning an experience you will never forget.

Boarding schools in the UK boast a long tradition of academic excellence, and CIS Education has a long established relationship with many of the top boarding schools across the UK.

CIS Education’s mission is to provide professional advisory services for those who wish to study in the UK. We have a wealth of information covering hundreds of independent schools and colleges in the UK. Our aim is to give a detailed analysis for every student and recommend the most suitable institute for them.

Our consultants have overseas study experience and are experts in arranging overseas education. We regularly visit the UK to maintain close contact with overseas institutions. This is to ensure that we hold the most up-to-date and accurate details to give the most constructive information to the local market.

If you want an in-depth discussion with one of our consultants, please book an appointment by emailing info@cisedu.com.hk or calling (852) 3521 0688.

Life at UK boarding schools

Most UK boarding schools are made up of a mix of international pupils and local UK pupils. ‘Boarders’ are pupils who live at the school. ‘Day pupils’ live with their families and return home at the end of the school day. This mix creates a good social atmosphere where you can make lifelong friends.

Boarding schools usually close for the long summer and Christmas holidays and pupils return home to their parents, or are able to remain in the UK with a guardian. Guardians can be arranged by CIS Education too. To find out more, please click here.

For the shorter half-term holidays, some schools stay open. Typically, there will not be normal classes during this time, but you will be supervised by staff and can take part in activities and events organised by the school.

Subjects and Qualifications

The UK boarding school system is split into three levels. Primary education is for children aged four or five up to 11 or 13. This has different names depending on the school and you might hear this referred to as primary school, infant school, junior school, pre-preparatory school or preparatory school.

Secondary education is for pupils aged 11 or 13 to 16. You might hear this referred to as secondary school, high school or senior school. In the last two years of secondary school (age 14 to 16), a lot of schools will study for GCSE qualifications. Alternatives include Standard grades or the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
